- W642226972 abstract "Evaporation has worried hydrologists long before hot weather concrete technologists observed severe cracking on exposed concrete surfaces. On the other hand, process engineers involved in drying have elaborated on the fundamentals of evaporation in order to maximise the efficiency of drying processes. Concrete technologists have used the results of these studies and have adopted a nomograph for predicting the rate of evaporation from concrete surfaces. High rates are warnings of possible plastic shrinkage cracking. However, recent elaborations have challenged indiscriminate use of this approach. In the present paper the methodologies of hydrologists and process engineers are briefly explained and their data and results are compared. These methods do not yield a unique estimate. Finally, a review of concrete technologists approaches and recent reservations regarding the estimation of the rate of evaporation from concrete in hot climatic conditions is given. Menzel's formula is especially criticized as it is not a fundamental law of evaporation from concrete surfaces. It is only an adaptation of Dalton's Law. It is concluded that collection of more accurate and relevant data on the rate of evaporation from concrete in hot climatic conditions and its effect on plastic shrinkage cracking is necessary so that hot weather concreting procedures and precautions can be refined.
