- W64233129 abstract "The idea that secretions of the testis might regulate body composition is as old as humanity itself. Humans have known since antiquity that “...you can take away the vigor of men by removing their testes.” Many cannibal tribes practiced castration on their victims several weeks prior to the sacrificial ritual. Ancient Hindus, Romans, and Egyptians advocated the use of the testicles of wild animals as treatment of impotence. The testicular transplantation experiments of Hunter and Berthold established that the secretions of the testis could regulate the growth of capon and male behavior, remote from the site of production. Brown-Sequard claimed to have rejuvenated himself by injecting himself with the extracts of guinea pig testis; these claims invited ridicule at the time, but his prescient prediction that secretions of the testis would reverse age-related changes in body composition and muscle strength has once again gained currency. In the 1920s, several surgeons in Europe and the United States amassed substantial wealth by practicing transplantation of testis from young, male prisoners, or those dying on the battlefield, to older men to reverse changes associated with aging." @default.
