- W64245008 abstract "The nineteenth century was paradoxical age: it saw the violent rise of nationalism in most European countries but it was also period which gave birth to scores of supra-national federal plans. Poles who have had long tradition of coexistence with other nationalities within the Polish State, were active participants in various federal movements throughout the century. Some of them, like the venerated historian and political leader Joachim Lelewel held strong views on the subject; he was known as an adherent of political federalism which would assure the independence of separate nationalities and also the self-government of each territory and country.1 Moreover, referring to Poland's long-lasting political union with Lithuania, Lelewel asserted that the Polish state has been a federation of states which came to being from voluntary union of different nations.2 Quite few of his compatriots were thinking on similar lines, even to the point of assuming that the historical price that will have to be paid for the resurrection of the Polish state will be some sort of federation with other, Slavic or non-Slavic countries. Such views became especially widespread and popular around 1848 when in the exalted atmosphere of reforms and revolutions even the wildest political plans seemed to have some chance of realization, and when political and military clashes between various national groups in Central Europe al ready well demonstrated the reactionary force inherent in nationalism. Most historians and students of the Great Emigration are familiar with the political activities of Prince Adam Czartoryski in exile. These in cluded tremendous efforts to win over all European states to the cause of Polish freedom and independence. Czartoryski's agents were active not only in Paris and London but practically in every capital of Europe; they supported every movement that was thought to be useful from the Polish point of view. This is why in 1848-1849 one of the main political aims of Hotel Lambert was reconciliation of Hungarians with the Slavs living within the boundaries of the Hungarian state, while at the same time, it gave strong diplomatic support to Louis Kossuth's Hungary fight" @default.
