- W642760272 abstract "The Port of Brisbane (PBPL) has initiated work to investigate the need for and priority of a dedicated freight rail corridor (DFRC) linking South East Queensland to the Port of Brisbane, to ensure Brisbane and Queensland continue to grow and remain domestically and internationally competitive. The DFRC also forms the first, crucial stage of the nation building Inland Rail project. There are four strong rationales for the DFRC: 1. Reduces growing congestion problems in South East Queensland by dealing with the increasing freight task which ultimately enables better long term planning in Brisbane. 2. Enables the development of the Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail to create a truly national rail freight network. The DFRC improves the efficiency of container movements on the eastern Seaboard by solving a key freight bottleneck for containers travelling to or through Brisbane. It also has the potential to increase competition between ports. 3. Creates the viable, efficient, long term route to market that the region's agricultural industry needs for it to compete successfully in the future global marketplace as demand for Australia's food exports increases. 4. Unlocks the significant potential for thermal coal exports in the southern Surat, Ipswich and Clarence-Moreton Basins as well as providing a significant funding source for the development of the DFRC. Each of these issues provides a strong rationale for the project in its own right. However, when considered collectively they provide a compelling case for action on the DFRC, which would truly be a vital link for the Queensland and national economy." @default.
