- W64278412 abstract "Interleukin 2 (IL-2) was described as “4 T cell growth factor” because of its potent mitogenic activity for activated T cells in vitro. IL-2 acts on all major lymphocyte subsets including B and natural killer (NK) cells, regulating growth and/or differentiation in a manner that overlaps the effects of other cytokines. IL-2 stands out as a lymphokine of central importance for the functioning of the immune system. In addition to positively regulating the activity of T cells, B cells, and NK cells, IL-2 is an essential cytokine in the intrathymic pathway of T cell maturation. In addition to lymphocyte maturation and activation during an immune response, the third aspect of interleukin activity might be the antigen-independent maintenance of cellular homeostasis, that is, the monitoring and control of leukocyte numbers and subset composition. The importance of IL-2 in T cell development and function, and its direct or indirect role in maintaining homeostasis of the immune system can be addressed by inactivating the IL-2 gene in experimental animals and studying the effects of IL-2 deficiency with respect to leukocyte subset representation in ontogeny as well as leukocyte function in immune responses." @default.
