- W642793186 abstract "Propagules of a White Flower Sonora alfalfa clone were established in five blocks in the field with propa gules of a different pollinator clone in each block. The overall crossing percentage was 52%, under cages with honeybees, as determined by hypocotyl color of the progeny. Crossing percentages were different for years oi j^.iiuction, but not for harvests within years. Similar crossing percentages were obtained from heavy and light seed. Crossing percentage averaged 92% for White Flower Sonora crossed by hand without emasculation in the green house. All pollinator clones gave similar crossing per centages. Number of crossed seeds was similar from large and small pods. Crossing percentages averaged 91% for White Flower Sirsa and 100% for Spar White Flower, as determined by flower color of the progeny. Intercrossing the three white-flowered clones produced purple-flowered hybrids, indicating that each clone was genetically different. A white-unifoliate-leaf mutant was found in 8.5% of the selfs of White Flower Sonora. Intensity and duration, not quality, of light enhanced expression of both this character and hypocotyl coloration. x xi Propagules of a yellow-flowered clone were estab lished in four blocks in the field with propagules of a different purple-flowered clone in each block. Pollination was by honeybees under cage. Progeny from the yellowflowered clone averaged 85% hybrids, while those from the purple-flowered clones averaged 26%, as determined by flower color. Center leaflets of trifoliate leaves were prepared for microscope viewing by extracting chlorophyll in 8096 ethyl alcohol, staining with phloroglucinol, and clearing with 3% KOH. There was almost as much variation in venation within clones as among them. Thus, venation was of little value for identification purposes. Under a l6-hour light period in the growth chamber, rapidity of germination and hypocotyl length at 9 days were greatest for non-winter-hardy cultivars. The last height measurement at 27 days, however, showed little relationship to winter hardiness. Rapidity of germination was corre lated positively with seed weight but negatively with percentage shriveled and dark seed. Cotyledon and unifoliate leaf length and width, and density and length of pubescence, increased with decreasing winter hardiness. Intensity of hypocotyl color and serration number and depth of trifoliate leaves bore little relationship to winter hardiness. xii Whole-mount slides of cotyledon and unifoliate leaves were made without staining. Degree of sinuation of epidermal cells was low, and stomate size small, but epi dermal cell and stomate numbers high, for M. falcata lines compared to M. sativa cultivars. Epidermal cells and stomates were larger for cotyledons than for unifoliate leaves Plant size was related to large cotyledons and unifoliate leaves which had large epidermal cells and stomates. Number and depth of sinuations of epidermal cells were positively related to epidermal cell size. Most (63%) of the 276 cultivar combinations could be separated with hypocotyl length at 9 days (P = .01)." @default.
