- W642959900 abstract "This paper analyses some of the changes that have taken place in the use patterns for travel in industrialized countries. Special attention is given to the relative impacts on energy use of changes in domestic passenger transport volumes, modes of travel, and the energy intensities of each mode. Transport volumes are measured in passenger kilometers (pkm). This study focuses on 4 modes: private automobiles (cars) including personal light trucks in the US; urban and intercity motor transport (buses); railway transport (rail, which includes intercity and suburban transport as well as urban tram- and sub-ways), and air transport (air). The components of changes in energy use that occurred between 1970 and 1987 are analysed by applying: (a) Laspeyres indices, and (b) Divisia indices. These indices are used to estimate how much energy was saved through lower energy intensities in the main modes of travel. The countries included in the study are Japan, the US, West Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Norway. The results indicate that travel in most OECD countries became more energy intensive, and energy use for travel increased, during the period studied. For the covering abstract see IRRD 864909." @default.
