- W642991447 abstract "A dual Whipple+Baltimore truss bridge was closed to traffic due to severe section losses to many truss members. The bridge was originally a two-span, wrought iron double intersection Whipple truss structure constructed in 1871. In 1937 Baltimore trusses were added to the outside of the original structure. Two sidewalk timber stringers sat on the floorbeams and were close to the bottom chords of the Baltimore trusses. Water contained in the timber and trapped in the gap between the two stringers provided a high moisture environment. Consequently, the horizontal legs of the Baltimore truss bottom chord angles were completely holed through at a number of panel points. Other structural defects were also identified through an in-depth inspection program. Major defects included: loose Whipple truss diagonal members, severe section losses to the hangers bars and other truss members. In order to develop a rehabilitation program so that the bridge could be reopened to car traffic and the owner specified emergency vehicles, a diagnostic load testing was conducted. Surprisingly, although the Baltimore trusses had severe section losses to the bottom chords, they carried more than 48% of the test truck load. Three-dimensional finite element models were also developed to diagnose the testing results and were further used to develop rehabilitation procedures.
