- W643192589 abstract "Abstract Anaerobic digestion is a technology widely known for the treatment of organic wastes. By this process the organic matter is partially mineralized and a fuel gas, biogas, is obtained, with a high methane content. Various types of reactors, including reactors with biomass retention are most suitable when the substrate to be treated particulate solids and has a relatively low COD. The UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) is one of the reactors with retention of biomass most widely used. These reactors make possible a decrease of hydraulic retention time as they maintain the microbial biomass in the reactor increasing its concentration and prolonging cell retention time. In this study, an UASB reactor has been used to enrich significant amounts of granular hydrogenotrophic biomass adapted to high concentrations of organic load, to produce methane from CO2 with electrochemically assisted system. We used a synthetic feed with acetic acid to activate the granules and adapt them to high organic loading rates (10 kg COD/m3·day) and finally acetic acid has been replaced by methanol influent to enrich granules with methanogenic hydrogenotrophic archaea. Parallel methanogenic activity assays were performed of the initial inoculum and the granular sludge of reactor at 215 operating days, before the replacement of acetic acid by methanol to evaluate the activation of the granules. Throughout the operation of the reactor, COD degradation was high (70-95%) and shows no organic overload phenomenon, indicating that operation of the reactor has been adequate and the biomass is adapted to high organic loading rates. Activity assays of it can be concluded that the initial inoculum, despite the long refrigerated period, has a good methanogenic activity and this only improve slightly after the operation of the UASB reactor fed with synthetic solution containing acetic acid, obtaining 212,9 mgDQO/gSSV·d, a value comparable with reviews. Despite the work has been finished, the enrichment process with methanol is still ongoing. As a continuation of this study, composition of microorganism population will be studied by molecular biology. Therefore, samples of initial inoculum and 215 operation days inoculum were taken, and a sample will be taken when methanol feeding finished. It is hoped that this study will contribute to the improvement of knowledge and operation of anaerobic reactors." @default.
