- W64328732 abstract "I consider two central arguments against extending the right to die to include a right to active euthanasia. What have come to be called “wedge arguments” appeal to the “unstable” distinction between human life that may be actively terminated and human life that may not be actively terminated. I locate two possible sources of the instability: (1) the inherent vagueness of moral proscriptions against active euthanasia, and (2) the epistemological limitations unique to applying principles proscribing active euthanasia. Each version of the wedge argument is circular in ways that are not so subtle. I consider next a rule utilitarian argument that appeals to the corrosive consequences of any social policy liberalizing the right to die. I show that even if the effects are as bad as anticipated, the rule utilitarian argument fails. The argument makes the subtle but common rule utilitarian mistake of assessing social policies by appeal to our current attitudes, desires, and dispositions. What matters to the assessment of social policies of any sort are rather the attitudes, desires, and dispositions we would have were such a policy instituted. I conclude that wedge arguments and rule utilitarian arguments of this sort are seriously flawed, and cannot be convincingly arrayed against passive euthanasia, active euthanasia, or any reasonably restrictive duty to die. The very same internal flaws will resurface in each context of application. The most reasonable response is a cautious rejection of the arguments against the liberalization of social policies in these areas." @default.
