- W643333511 abstract "Mono esters were prepared by both the esterification of individual fatty acids and the transesterification of vegetable seed oil triglycerides, with a range of simple aliphatic alcohols. Yields of esters were highest when strong mineral acid (sulphuric acid) or strong base (sodium hydroxide) catalysts were used. Sunflower oil, its methyl and ethyl esters and commercial distillate were shown to be newtonian fluids and for these substances, relationships were established between viscosity and temperature. Significant improvements in ester yield were obtained without loss of physical characteristics by carrying out the transesterification reaction on the whole seed oil in situ, with the best results being obtained from seeds of low moisture content. A wide range of seed oil compositions was obtained from sunflowers grown under the influence of an artificially controlled temperature environment. Here, temperature was shown to be of more importance than photoperiod. Ignition quality, determined by both calculation and actual engine performance, was shown to be related systematically to the chemical structure of the ester fuels and a set of guidelines has been proposed for the prediction of fuel performance. A stock product, unmodified diesel sedan has been operated for 25,000 km, fuelled exclusively with sunflower methyl esters produced commercially. Frequent driver reports and regular engine examinations have shown performance to be virtually trouble free. Fuel evaluation in a test engine has shown that blends of distillate with seed oils and seed oil esters exhibit ignition quality values generally lower than that of distillate alone." @default.
