- W643453903 abstract "Industrial pineapple waste can reach up to 50% (w/w) of the total processed fruit. This waste is characterized by containing a significant amount of fermentable sugars, cellulose and hemicelluloses; thus, it could be used as a low cost alternative for bioethanol production. However, the lignocellulosic structure is hardly degradable and, therefore, a pretreatment step prior to the enzymatic hydrolysis is needed. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the effectiveness of a microwave pretreatment before enzymatic hydrolysis of industrial pineapple waste for bioethanol production. With this purpose, the solid waste was treated using different microwave powers (10.625, 8.5, 6.375, 4.25 and 2.125 W/g) and times (1-6 min, 8, 10, 14 and 20 min) and then saccharified (pH 5, 50 oC, 0.4% (w/w) of cellulase, 0.1% (w/w) of hemicellulase from Aspergillus niger during 24 h). Total soluble solids, pH and sugar profile were determined on the final hydrolyzate. Results suggest that, in general, microwave pretreatment enhance the enzymatic hydrolysis of pineapple waste. Pretreatments at 6.375 W/g, at 4.25 W/g during 11-14 min and at 8.5 W/g in the range 1-3 min generated a statistically significant increase in the sugars yield with respect to the nonpretreated hydrolyzed sample. Specifically, the samples pretreated at 6.375 W/g during 4 min underwent an increase of 47% in fermentable sugars, and of 46% in total sugars, as compared with the non-pretreated hydrolyzed waste, and of 123% with respect to the initial waste." @default.
