- W64357431 abstract "For over ten years now, several authors have proposed a model in which cell surface structures play a key role in embryonic development (Glueckson-Waelsch and Erickson 1970; Bennett et al. 1971; Jacob 1978). It has been thought that during development surface antigens are in some way implicated in the unfolding of the genetic program. The experimental study of this hypothesis raised many difficulties because of the scarcity of material, and of the rapid differential transition of the cells through successive states of differentiation. This hypothesis implies that not only are there defined patterns of surface structures during successive stages of differentiation which might be quite easy to study in a descriptive way, but it also suggests that during development, at least some surface antigens play a functional role which demands a rather new experimental technology. Some of these difficulties have been overcome with the help of teratocarcinoma cells. Teratocarcinoma are tumors, first described by Stevens (Stevens 1967), from which many stable cell lines have been established. Tumor stem cells, the embryonal carcinoma (EC) cells, have the potential to differentiate into derivatives of the three germ layers." @default.
