- W643728104 abstract "The report describes an inter-Nordic investigation of accident rate on paved roads with different pavement surface conditions. The investigation was based on data from measurements in 1982-86 of rut depth and unevenness supplemented with traffic and road data, weather statistics and information on traffic accidents with injuries. Accidents in junctions were excluded from the analysis. The roads analyzed all had a speed limit of 70 km/h or higher and an average daily traffic of at least 1500 vehicles - i.e. predominantely rural roads with medium or high traffic volumes. The results indicate a lower accident rate for roads with more worn pavement surfaces - more uneven and with deeper ruts - than for those with only little wear. However, during days with more precipitation than 10 millimetres, the roads with worn pavements showed a higher accident rate. These average differences were caused by differences during summer. The tendency for the winter was the reverse - a slightly higher accident rate on more worn pavement surfaces. Rut depth and unevenness were originally measured for other purposes. The limited amount of data made it difficult to eliminate probable co-variation between pavement surface condition and road parameters like road geometry, speed limit etc. Therefore such parameters may have contributed to the differences in accident rate. However, it is likely that pavement surface conditions have the impact indicated above." @default.
