- W644156175 abstract "On the Dutch motorways, congestion is a daily recurring phenomenon, unfortunately. Lack of finances and lack of space limit the possibilities for extending the network. Besides, there is no political support for expansion; the current policy focuses on making better use of the existing infrastructure. In respect to this, during the past few years several measures in the field of traffic management have been surveyed and/or carried out. Dynamic cross sections, i.e., the flexible division of the roadway into a varying number of lanes, as traffic circumstances require, are seen as a very promising measure. They allow for capacity supply to be attuned to the actual demand. In 1997, a first step was taken with the introduction of a so-called (dynamically controlled: traffic lane during peak hours, emergency lane during off-peak hours). In spite of the positive results, it is felt that this measure has serious limitations: the emergency lane is temporarily absent and application is necessarily limited to stretches of road between junctions. And what is more, present-day road marking cannot comply with the demands of dynamic cross sections. In 1998 dynamic road marking was developed. In 1999 this road marking was applied for the first time on a motorway near Rotterdam. It has been evaluated for aspects of traffic engineering, construction, and road-user behavior. The positive findings have led to the drafting of design criteria for dynamic cross sections with dynamic road marking and further research into the effects on safety and traffic operations. This research has been carried out with the help of simulation models. In this paper, dynamic cross sections are introduced, with particular emphasis on the pilot projects carried out in the Netherlands. A description is given of dynamic marking materials, and the results of a field test with these materials are presented. Furthermore, preliminary design criteria for dynamic cross sections are given. Finally, depending on the progress of a pilot project that will be completed in the year 2000, the layout is presented of an existing motorway section that can be dynamically divided into a varying number of traffic lanes with adjusted widths." @default.
