- W644486652 abstract "Guidelines for the realignment of unsignalized, skewed intersections on rural two-lane highways in Nebraska were developed in this research. The guidelines are based on the results of a benefit-cost analysis of skewed intersection realignment over a range of conditions representative of those on rural two-lane highways in Nebraska. The guidelines define the intersecting roadway AADTs for which the benefits of realignment exceed its cost. The benefits used in the analysis were the operational and accident cost savings resulting from intersection realignment. The operational cost savings included running, travel time, and delay cost savings, which were calculated using kinematic and delay equations. The accident cost savings were computed from the results of an analysis of the accident experience at skewed and nonskewed intersections on rural two-lane highways in Nebraska. The road user cost savings and costs of realignment were computed using unit cost values representative of roadway and traffic conditions on rural two-lane highways in Nebraska. The four methods of realigning skew intersections described in the AASHTO A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets were considered in the benefit-cost analysis. The most cost-effective method of realignment is method B, wherein the realignment is accomplished by replacing the skewed approaches on the minor, stop controlled roadway with reverse horizontal curves. The least cost-effective methods are methods C and D, wherein the realignment of the minor roadway results in the creation of two 3-leg intersections on the major roadway. Therefore, it is recommended that method B be used and methods C and D not be used to realign skewed intersections. The results of the benefit-cost analysis indicated that the cost-effectiveness of intersection realignment also depends on the type of intersection (i.e., 3-leg or 4-leg), the type of minor roadway (i.e., paved or gravel), the skew angle, and, in the case of 4-leg intersections, the percent of turns on the minor roadway. Therefore, the guidelines developed account for these effects. However, it should be noted that the guidelines are limited to intersections where the major, higher-volume, roadway is uncontrolled and the minor, lower-volume, roadway is stop controlled. Also, the guidelines are based on the presumption that adequate intersection sight distance is always provided whether or not realignment is warranted. It must be noted that intersections with skew angles above 15 degrees cam cause the sight distance to the right, across an acute angle quadrant to be restricted by the vehicle itself to less than the required sight distance. Therefore, even when the guidelines indicate that realignment is not warranted, the stopping locations on such approaches must still be designed to provide adequate intersection sight distances." @default.
