- W64557749 abstract "In general, there is a scarcity of teachers who are successful in teaching remedial courses. Why? Many teachers have sufficient subject matter preparation to teach remedial classes. In their preservice training, teachers are frequently required to demonstrate a certain level of competence with regard to knowledge of appropriate psychological principles and pedagogical techniques. And many teacher preparation programs now offer training in sharing and respecting various points of view and other communication skills. Why then, is there a limited number of teachers, especially beginning teachers, that are successful in teaching remedial courses, and what can be done to help resolve this difficulty? Part of the answer to the first component of the preceding question resides in the students and the teacher. In addition, teachers by virtue of their own background, often fall short of appreciating the frustrations, humiliations, values and attitudes felt by many students in remedial classes. How many teachers viewed themselves as failures in secondary school? How many experienced the humiliation of being assigned to remedial sections? How many teachers had to deal with the realization that they were unable to adequately read and write as they progressed through school, or experienced the bore-" @default.
