- W646721012 abstract "Objective To evaluate the value of assessing the nutritional characters of diabetic nephropathy patients by using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DEXA).Methods one hundred and forty-three chronic renal failure(CRF)patients in stage 4~5 without dialysis were enrolled and divided into diabetic nephropathy(DN)group and non-diabetic nephropathy(NDN) group.Body composition including lean body mass(LBM) and fat mass(FM) were evaluated by DEXA.Biochemical,anthropometric measurements and subjective global nutritional assessment(SGA) were performed at the same time.Results Compared with NDN group,there was a higher prevalence of malnutrition in DN patients(SGA score≥2)(55.1% Vs 34.5%,P0.05).DN patients showed lower serum albumin levels and pre-albumin levels,but higher CRP levels.For either men or women,body weight,BMI and FM-DEXA were little higher in diabetic CRF patients,not showing a statistical significance.In addition,mid-arm muscle circumference and LBM-DEXA were lower in the diabetic CRF patients.Conclusions Our study shows a high prevalence of malnutrition in diabetic CRF patients without dialysis.The malnourished patients were characterized by low serum albumin levels and low LBM-DEXA.DEXA can exactly evaluate muscle and fat content and it would be a good method for detecting early malnutrition in patients with diabetic nephropathy." @default.
