- W646905959 abstract "The Road Administration uses about 200 M€ annually to the preservation of public roads. A major part of that, 150 M€, goes to the preservation of pavements. Pavement Management Systems have an important role in the planning process of pavement works. Condition data is one of the most important parts of a PMS. Finnish Road Administration has been using manually collected cracking data of pavements during 1986-2005. As is well known the manually collected cracking data has several dis-benefits, like slow and expensive to collect, high variation of accuracy and precision and so on. During the 2006 and 2007 Finnra is moving towards to the automatic crack collection methods with the Swedish PAVUE system. During 2007 Finnra is going to conduct a competition process to give a 3-5 years contract of data collection with automatic methods. A relatively large research and development program has been going on in Finnra during the 2003-2006. The main purpose of this RD program has been to improve the quality of the whole planning process of the preservation of public roads. One part of this quality improvement plan has been to develop condition measurement procedures. This study updates the current state of the art of automatic crack collection methods and equipments which are currently available. There are plenty of literature and studies dealing this issue made during the last 3 years. The three main parts of an automatic crack collection system are the collection system, the image processing system and the user interface of the whole measurement device. The collection technique has been under very fast development. From analogue based technique there is movement towards to digital techniques. The lightning systems are moving from strobe based lightning to laser or LED based lighting systems. This is an important benefit because they uses much less energy and are more reliable. The analogue camera systems have been replaced with digital area cameras or linescan cameras which have a much better resolution. Much development work has been done also with the image recognition systems and several different and better algorithms have been developed. There are at least four different producers of automatic crack collection equipments which probably are available when Finnra is going to start the procurement process bye cracking data of pavements. The resolution of most accurate equipment is now at the level of 1 mm. That level will make it possible to collect even very thin cracks reliably. In this survey we found out that there are at least four producers which are available concerning Finnish data collection, the Swedish Ramboll with the PAVUE system, the Canadian Roadware with the ARAN system, the Danish- American Dynatest/Waylink with the DHDV system and Australian ARRB with the Hawkeye system. One important thing which needs improvement is the methods and ways to show the accuracy and precision of equipment in a common, understandable, and comparable way. That would make it easier to find out and compare different equipments and give more confidence to road authorities which are deciding when to take these techniques to use.
