- W646928465 abstract "This paper examines some of the consequences which follow when dynamic, traffic responsive, signal-settings are used. In order to do this the paper considers the traffic assignment problem in a road network which has responsive traffic signals controlling traffic flows at junctions. The paper shows that, under these (responsive) circumstances, a solution to a given feasible assignment problem may not be unique, may not be stable and may not even exist. (In the usual framework for the assignment problem, where each link has a corresponding strictly increasing unbounded cost-flow function, the existence, uniqueness and stability of a solution to any given feasible problem are all guaranteed.) In particular, the paper gives an example of a feasible assignment problem, with junction interactions controlled by traffic signals according to current policies, for which no equilibrium solution exists. In the dynamics of this example, delays approach infinity as time passes. The paper gives a control policy which, if followed at each junction, ensures that (under reasonably natural conditions) any feasible traffic assignment problem has an equilibrium solution. The likely effect of this capacity-maximizing policy on total travel time is briefly discussed." @default.
