- W646987592 abstract "Linear programming (LP) is the best known and most widely used optimization technique in industry and the military. The conceptual process of formulating and solving a linear programming problem can be decomposed into four stages, problem investigation, model formulation, data matrix generation, and algorithmic solution. Various types of knowledge and reasoning processes are used at each stage to perform specific tasks. The problem investigation and model formulation stages are currently accomplished by human experts. The complexity of real world models makes their formulation and interpretation an error prone and time consuming task. The objective of this research is to improve these processes. A graphical, object-oriented representation for LP models is proposed. Users formulate their models using an iconic representation to depict transportation networks, factories, inventories, and general LP activities.Problem formulation strategies aimed at reducing the complexity of the formulation task include multiple problem representations, hierarchical decomposition, consistency checking and non-procedurality. A prototype system for translating between the graphic representation and an algebraic problem formulation is developed using techniques from artificial intelligence. The approach is general in that is relies on structural and syntactic features common to all linear programs. Some properties and limitations of this approach are discussed. The prototype system demonstrates a number of model management features including automatic construction of larger models from submodels, an online inquiry facility and improved model documentation. The dissertation concludes with some suggestions for future research." @default.
