- W647502315 abstract "The objectives of this project were as follows: investigate the global and local behavior of steel bridges with and without diaphragms; investigate the feasibility of using the new AASHTO LRFD empirical method of concrete slab design, which requires a minimal amount of reinforcing bars, when relatively large girder spacing is prescribed; assess the load distribution capabilities in the transverse direction of a bridge system having large girder spacing; investigate the causes of observed transverse cracking in steel bridges, an observation reported in many states, even before opening the bridge to traffic; assess the deflection of steel bridges due to shrinkage of the concrete slab and evaluate the level of stresses developed in bridge members during the curing period; assess the ultimate load-carrying capacity in the absence of diaphragms; conduct field tests on composite steel girder bridges under service loads to verify the findings of the laboratory tests; and develop a user friendly and test verified 3-D finite element analysis package for analysis of steel girder bridges. The report is organized in 11 chapters and 3 appendices. Chapter 1 provides an introduction. Chapter 2 contains the literature review. Chapters 3 through 8 give details of the full scale steel bridge constructed in the laboratory, a description of the tests performed and a discussion of results. Chapter 9 provides a summary of field tests conducted. Summary and conclusions are provided in Chapter 10. Chapter 11 contains references. Appendix A contains design calculations using the 15th edition of the AASHTO Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges. Appendix B contains the strain and deflection versus load data acquired at various points during the final load test on the bridge (the ultimate strength test).
