- W648291292 abstract "There is a need to develop a more ecologically valid, unpredictable and multi-dimensional test for evaluating in-vehicle systems, but one that is also simple and quick to use and does not require expensive equipment. To this end, the naturalistic driver distraction PC-based test has been developed, which measures simulated driving performance while the driver is performing a secondary task. Drivers are required to maintain their speed and position on the road using standard vehicle controls. The test measures a number of standard driving performance measures including speed; standard deviation of lane position (SDLP); following distance (time headway); and reaction time to expected and unexpected events. The aim of this study was to conduct a pilot validation to establish the test's technical operation and ensure that the test is sensitive to different types of distraction. The lane change test was used as a comparison measure. Twenty-seven drivers (16 males and 11 females) each completed the lane change test and the distraction test under normal driving conditions (baseline) and while performing one of two secondary tasks, each with two levels of difficulty. The results of the validation study are discussed in the paper along with recommendations for refining the test. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no.
