- W649028462 abstract "Scope of Study. The major purpose of this study was to obtain quantitative information concerning the present and future computer utilization of small businesses. A survey was used to obtain information about the company profile, the types of computer utilization, the types of data processing equipment and employees, the types of computerized business applications, source of application programs, and the programming languages used. The questionnaire, after being piloted and revised, was mailed to 496 small businesses (31 in each of 16 states) selected from Dun and Bradstreet's Million Dollar Directory (1982). An original and follow-up mailing resulted in a return rate of 50.20 percent, with 46.17 percent usable returns. A Statistical Analysis System (SAS) program was utilized to reveal frequencies and percentages of each response. Further comparisons, utilizing two-way tables and the chi-square test for significance, were conducted to indicate relationships between selected items of the questionnaire.Findings and Conclusions. A majority of small businesses do utilize computerized data processing, and a large percentage of those businesses have in-house data processing capabilities. Of those businesses which do not utilize any data processing currently, one-third were considering acquiring in-house data processing. A large number of small businesses utilized computers with less than 256K bytes of primary storage, indicating the usage of minicomputers and microcomputers. Most computer systems were purchased, and terminals, printers, and disk drives were the most common types of peripheral equipment. Computer operators and data entry clerks are the most common types of data processing employees, and also the most common types to be employed in the future. The business applications most likely to be computerized are general ledger accounting, accounts receivable/billing, accounts payable/writing checks, payroll, and inventory control. Most business application programs are written by contract programming consultants, and BASIC is the programming language used most frequently. Small businesses are utilizing data processing, and it appears the use of microcomputers, minicomputers, and small computers for information management will continue to grow as their capabilities increase and prices decrease." @default.
