- W649080260 abstract "The American rail industry relies heavily on one of this country's most plentiful natural resources - wood. Capital budget constraints cause railroads to remain focused on the life cycle performance of all assets, and the cost vs. benefit of the timber tie merit its marketplace dominance. While wood remains the material of choice of railroads in well over 90% of maintenance and new construction, alternative ties are seeing use in increasingly specialized applications. Technological improvements and a better understanding of alternative material performance and limitations make the decision process railroaders engage in more complex every year. Alternatives to the traditional creosote treated wood, steel and concrete crossties continue to promote their speciality markets. Composite crossties as well as plastic ties are making some inroads in the maketplace." @default.
