- W649767918 abstract "Publisher SummaryCognitive aging spans age-related changes in higher order abilities, such as learning and memory, thinking, planning, and problem solving. Cognitive changes fundamentally affect the life quality of individuals, and much research is currently directed toward furthering the understanding of the brain on the bases of these changes. Modern brain imaging techniques play a key role in this regard. This chapter discusses the age-related memory changes from a cognitive neuroscience perspective. It reviews three issues in the cognitive neuroscience of aging. All memory systems and processes are not uniformly affected by aging. Cognitive studies have shown that episodic recall and demanding working-memory tasks are highly age sensitive, and brain-imaging studies have demonstrated that increased cognitive demands and associated recruitment of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) will magnify the effects of aging. The second issue concerned inter-individual variability in aging. Although many 70- to 80-year-old adults show evidence of age-related decline, some continue to maintain very high levels of cognitive performance. Preserved cognitive functioning tends to be associated with a “youth-like” brain-activity pattern. The third issue concerned the issue of when aging, at the mean level, has a significant effect on memory performance. Longitudinal cognitive and functional brain-imaging studies converge on a fairly late-onset of decline, starting around the age of 60 years. This chapter concludes by hinting toward a structural origin of brain activity." @default.
