- W649945868 abstract "Terrain evaluation is the term applied to a method of ground investigation, usually involving the interpretation of air photography and sometimes satellite imagery. In this paper the techniques used are described, and examples given from work carried out by the Overseas Unit of the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL). Experience gained over many years by the Overseas Unit confirms that the use of terrain evaluation can substantially benefit road planning, especially the initial desk study and feasibility stages. In most cases it achieves this by providing valuable prior information about ground conditions so that important cost-saving decisions can be taken at a very early stage in the design process. Amongst the principal tasks that can profit from terrain evaluation are route alignment, bridge siting, the location of constructional materials, and the recognition and avoidance of hazards such as land-sliding. It can also help in planning effective and economical site investigations. The techniques are used to maximum advantage in regions where little previously-recorded information on ground conditions is available: this applies to Britain as well as the developing world. Of the many remote sensing aids that may be used to interpret ground features, LANDSAT satellite imagery with its smaller scale, is more suited to reconnaissance-level studies. Decision-making at the more tactical level of the detailed site investigation would benefit more from the use of larger scale air photography. Although the most commonly used air photography is black-and-white, in certain circumstances the interpretation of colour photography, either natural or infra-red, would be a more appropriate choice. This can now be obtained quite cheaply and with greater flexibility by using small format cameras mounted in locally-hired light aircraft, thereby avoiding the risk of incurring expensive standing charges. In road engineering, terrain evaluation is commonly an ad-hoc procedure, used for specific projects. Increasingly, however, terrain is being classified for multi-purpose use, providing a convenient and accessible framework for storing data for future planning activities. Recent examples of these are computerised inventories of road-building materials in Colombia and Indonesia. Terrain evaluation techniques are also being used to create landslides hazard maps and to furnish evidence for environmental impact studies. (Author/TRRL)" @default.
