- W65003104 abstract "It is a complicated matter to talk about music. Musical discourse, like all discourse, rests not on inherently privileged philosophical or aesthetic foundations, but on constantly shifting polemical ground, where even the terms of debate are frequently in dispute. A single musical event can become a battleground for competing worldviews, methodologies, and social stances. Music, though a complex phenomenon, is often stripped of its complexity by the constraints of disciplinary boundaries and individual predispositions. To open a way out of the resultant polemical tangle, this article proposes eight modes of analysis that map a range of valuable strategies for apprehending and organizing musical phenomena and that can be employed in different combinations and weightings to inflect discourse about music. These modes are elaborated and illustrated using excerpts from analyses as found in the scholarly literature. Various issues are examined, including the mapping of modal configurations onto specific texts, the interplay of different modes situated on multiple levels of analysis or metaanalysis, the role played by modal conflict in methodological disputes, and the identification of modal combinations in effective discourse. To motivate this discussion, I consider the following illustration. There is something not quite right about the violin melody shown in Example 1 the opening theme of the Andante moderato movement of Gustav Mahler's Sixth Symphony. There are several musical features we could identify in support of this claim for example, the way the melodic line suddenly thrusts upward, hangs there ambiguously, and wafts down to the cadence. We might observe a clash between the melody's rather conventional character and the intrusion of various altered notes and metric irregularities. But what could one say about this moment that would best explain it, put it in perspective? Now consider the following two responses to this problematic passage:" @default.
