- W6500632 abstract "In steelworker and other blue-collar communities, in older industrial areas, a wave of layoffs and plant closings because of capital disinvestment and relocation in recent years has threatened to destroy the accustomed way of life for thousands of skilled, experienced workers and their families. Many studies have focused on the consequences of this job loss for individual workers and individual families. Very little attention has been given to collective responses by grassroots labor and community groups. The perspective taken in this paper is that the protest actions and organizing efforts of local committees of the unemployed and of community coalitions against plant closings, for example, may be viable and healthy responses to the experience of economic dislocation, that these activities may directly or indirectly contribute to the well-being of unemployed workers and their families. Although the number of people involved in such groups remains relatively small, the emergence, growth, and initial accomplishments of these efforts, in a growing number of cities, represent a neglected, but potentially significant, development. Support for this perspective is found in mental health and historical research on responses to unemployment. Buss & Redburn [1], among others, have found that informal networks and support groups formed by the unemployed are more likely to be utilized by industrial workers and to be effective than the services of mental health and welfare agencies.
