- W650703091 abstract "This report summarizes an investigation of the influence of cement on moisture migration in cement paste and simulated concrete as related to the problem of D-cracking of portland cement concrete pavements. Laboratory studies of moisture migration in pastes were conducted on 32 cements in Phase A. In Phase B, 16 of the cements were selected for further laboratory studies on simulated concretes. It was established in Phase A that statistically significant difference did exist in the moisture change and related linear dimensional change behavior of the cements studied. The results of the Phase B investigation indicated that, under the conditions of this study, cement source did not significantly influence the onset of potentially disruptive forces during freezing of concretes containing D-crack-prone limestone aggregates. The Phase B work did point out the importance of the moisture content of the aggregate in controlling the dilation of concretes subjected to freezing. Water-cured concrete specimens (aggregate fully saturated) exhibited a dilation the first time the concrete was frozen. Air drying of the concretes provided a period of immunity to dilation. It was concluded that the water permeability of these concretes was the same from a practical viewpoint. /FHWA/" @default.
