- W65113910 abstract "This thesis is concerned with the intersection of two types of reproduction, both ofnwhich have material and symbolic aspects: the reproduction of the body and of thenbody politic. It is the symbolic dimension of reproduction (both biological andnpolitical) that is of interest here; specifically, the ways in which today's principalnsignifier of reproduction and biology - the genetic - is deployed in the reproduction, nnaturalisation and legitimation of liberal ideology.n n This project explores the ways in which genetics, widely popularised biotechnologies, nand the discourses surrounding them, represent key political concepts such as thenindividual subject, equality, freedom, and justice. Early critics of the scientificnpractice and public portrayal of genetics were primarily concerned with the politicalnimplications of genetic determinism. In the three decades since these critiquesnemerged there have been significant transformations in the ways that genetics isnpracticed and represented. However, contemporary critical analysis of genetics, whichncontinues predominantly in the field of sociology, demonstrates that genetics is oftennused to support conceptions of human nature and social relations that are highlynrelevant to politics. The aim of this thesis is to take up these insights and orient themnmore firmly toward a specifically political analysis. The thesis investigates the waysnin which non-specialist science literature on genetics reiterates political concepts andnprinciples resonant with liberalism.n n The terrain selected for this study is a newly emerging site of discursive production, nthat of non-specialist science literature concerning genetic knowledge andntechnologies. Specifically, I undertake a critical discourse analysis of three importantnnon-specialist texts on genetics and reprogenetic technologies: Lee M. Silver'snRemaking Eden: Cloning, Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humankind?; MattnRidley's Genome: The Autobiography of a Species in 23 Chapters; and FrancisnFukuyama's Our Posthuman Future: Consequences of the Biotechnology Revolution.nThrough this analysis, I articulate how representations of genetics and reprogeneticntechnologies in non-specialist science literature normalise liberal ideology.n n The central argument of this thesis is that liberal discourse is normalised in non-specialistnscience literature on genetics and reprogenetic technologies. By this I meannthat non-specialist texts on genetics represent liberalism as both natural and just. Thenimplications of normalising liberalism with reference to genetics are significant fornseveral reasons. First, it continues the tradition of grounding politics in (historicallyncontingent conceptions of) biology and nature, with the all the attendant constraintsnon political theorising that such reification entails. Second, such a move has importantnimplications for how the nature and sources of in/equality (amongst individuals andnbetween groups) are understood. Finally, reframing in/equality according to the logicnof the genetic has implications for the liberal conception of justice, the location ofnpolitical responsibility, and the development of social policy to address the adversenconsequences of inequality within liberal polities. In exploring these themes, thisnstudy contributes to the diverse body of literature that critically analyses the impact ofnthe new genetics on contemporary understandings of society and politics.nn" @default.
