- W651472400 abstract "A low standard gravel road in the Inanda area of Durban, South Africa had been tarred and the relevant geometrical improvements made. The Department of Transport requested that a study of buses travelling on the route be undertaken and the fuel savings due to improved ground conditions determined. A previous report (see IRRD no 805639) described surveys on the gravel road before these improvements, and presented relevant fuel consumption and travel time values, and regression models for the estimation of fuel consumption of buses as dependent on travel conditions. In this current report, the models developed previously are tested for accuracy and the fuel consumption savings are derived. The major finding of the study is that up to 30% of fuel used by buses could be saved as a result of the geometric improvements associated with the surfacing of the road in a hilly terrain." @default.
