- W651491196 abstract "This paper describes how reflective cracking in asphalt overlays of jointed portland cement concrete pavement (PCC) is not a new problem. Many methods have been research and tried since the early 1950's when reflective cracking became a prominent problem. It soon became obvious that thin asphalt overlays on these pavements were only a short-range solution for improving the surface condition of these old, jointed pavements. The Highway Research Board's proceedings from the 1950's indicated minimal experimentation with the process of cracking the old slabs and seating them with heavy pneumatic rollers. In the early 1960s, and continuing through the 1970's data have indicated that this procedure was one of the more effective ways of retarding reflective cracking on these pavements. When the Interstate system reached the 20-year mark in the late 1970's and early 1980's, the need became evident for an effective way of overlaying these rigid pavements and producing a pavement with a reasonable service life. Virtually all urban expressways and much of the rural road mileage in Michigan were paved with jointed PCC pavement. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) knew of the work done in Wisconsin and this stimulated their interest in the procedure of cracking and seating prior to overlay. In the late 1970's, MDOT designated a section of low-volume state road as a test section. The success encountered on this test section encouraged the use of this technique on several additional projects. In addition, a research project was developed and utilized on a section of high-volume pavements in 1983 and this paper attempts to recreate Michigan's experience with this procedure." @default.
