- W65149785 abstract "Malignant melanomas have long been regarded as very radioresistant tumours. This judgement was based on the observation that contrary to other cutaneous tumours, melanomas did not respond well to radiotherapy and did not regress even if doses were escalated to levels which produced very severe skin reactions. Yet tumour regression rate is an inadequate criterion of tumour radiosensitivity, which rather should be based on local tumour control. After primary radiotherapy of stage I malignant melanomas, in-field recurrences are very rare (Storck et al. 1972; Elsmann et al. 1991). For more than half a century, the textbooks of radiotherapy and oncology have repeated the assertion that malignant melanomas display pronounced radioresistance, although some authors have added that this is not invariably the case and have reported on some spectacular success with radiotherapy, e. g. del Regato and Spjut (1977). The first to point to the variable response of malignant melanomas to radiotherapy was MIESCHER (1926). Following radiotherapy, he observed more complete remissions of those malignant melanomas which had a higher mitotic rate before treatment. This led Miescher (1926) to associate the poor radiation response of some melanomas with the low proliferative activity of those melanomas.KeywordsMelanoma CellMelanoma Cell LineHuman MelanomaComplete Response RateLocal Control RateThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
