A method of taking advantage of the improved damage stability characteristics obtained, when suitably-spaced watertight longitudinal bulkheads are introduced to ro/ro ferries, can be achieved by replacing the existing car deck with a perforated car deck. Thus, when a sudden flow of water comes into the vessel, this water will immediately flow into the bowels of the ship, where it can be momentarily contained between short longitudinal bulkheads. Additionally, this void below the perforated car deck can be equipped with a large number of computer-controlled hydraulic pumps, which become automatically activated when the vessel is flooded. Even if the vessel sinks, it will sink slowly, and allow more time to save lives." @default.
