- W651981311 abstract "Better assessment of bridge capacity and fatigue life can lead to improved decisions regarding maintenance, capital expenditures, and upgrades or replacement. In order to conduct a feasibility assessment on a bridge, engineers need to rate the bridge for impact loads for fatigue. This article describes how a recent study tested four ballast deck steel bridge spans to measure impacts under train traffic at various speeds. The object was to develop and recommend appropriate impact values that could be used for fatigue assessment of steel bridges. It was found that using 35 percent of the current design- impact factor is appropriate for fatigue assessment, and that in some cases, using this reduced impact factor can show a capacity increase sufficient for heavy-axle load traffic instead of 100-ton traffic. It was also found that slid-flat wheels and low railjoints crated the highest impact readings, and that reducing the number of high-impact wheels, rail joints and overloaded cars can reduce the stress state of railroad bridges." @default.
