- W651999269 abstract "A process for the fast determination of the sieve line for sand having particle sizes of 0-4 mm has been developed. It involves the separation of the sand sample being investigated into 6 fractions 0/0.063; 0.063/0.16; 0.16/0.4; 0.4/1; 1/2.5 and 2.5/4 mm and the measurement of the quantity of each fraction. The division of the sample of sand takes place in an elutriation chamber, which has water passing through it in a horizontal direction. From suitable arrangements for the entry of water and its movement within the chamber a laminar current can be achieved. The suspended sample is led over a horizontal tube with the same speed of flow as within the elutriation chamber. Within the chamber the particles of sand take different routes, according to their diameter-related speed of descent. The four coarse sand fractions (diameter larger than 0.16 mm) are collected on the floor of the chamber in four funnels corresponding to the size of the particles, the two fine sand fractions (under 0.16 mm) are divided according to particle size and carried out in the stream of water. The sand in the four coarse fractions is collected for 1 minute in containers and then weighed under water and emptied out. The determination of the quantities of the fine sand fractions is carried out by the continual measurement of the sand concentration in the exiting stream of water, based upon the absorption of laser light. The processing and display of the measured data and also the control of the process is carried out by an electronic computing- and control-unit including a video-terminal for display and data presentation. Trial measurements with the separating equipment showed that particle size distribution by elutriation differs according to various measurement criteria from that determined by sieving. The separating equipment enabled clear and reproducible analyses to be made, in which differences from the sieve line were well understood in terms of elutriation. Moreover, in elutriation the surface area of the particle is decisive and therefore the results are more applicable for concrete mixing than those from sieving. (TRRL)" @default.
