- W652097642 abstract "The extension of the M1 motorway past Leeds to link up with the A1 has been planned since the late 1960s. There were numerous studies, consultations and public inquiries until the Secretary of State's decision in 1993. The Highways Agency launched its use of PFI in 1994. The M1-A1 Link Road is the largest and most complex of the eight initial schemes under the DBFO (Design, Build, Finance and Operate) concept. The M1-A1 Link Road provides a new strategic motorway link between the M1/M62 motorways south of Leeds and the A1 and A64 Trunk Roads to the south of Wetherby. The scheme has an overall length of 30 km and has cost around 240 million. It includes a 5-span viaduct, two tunnels, 45 bridges and 85 signal gantries. The scheme provides extensive traffic relief to many important radial routes to the east of Leeds bringing environmental benefits to many communities. It is estimated that 8000 HGVs per day have been removed from Leeds, that 150 accidents per annum will be avoided and the reduction in congestion will save 500 million per annum for the regional economy. The removal of through traffic allows the introduction of wider public transport measures within Leeds, in accordance with the government's Integrated Transport Policy.
