- W652100951 abstract "It is generally accep ted that the locus for the rhythm!city of locomotion is in the spinal cord. To understand how the central program elaborates locomotion, the behaviors it controls must be understood. This study evaluated locomotor behaviors in the in tact normal ca t . Cats were trained to walk and trot on a moving treadmill under three different reinforcement conditions: food rew ard , air avoidance, and shock avoidance. Cinematographic records were made of each cat for both g a i t s . Several measurements of interlimb and intralimb timings were made from the filmed rec o rd s . Ankle angles at the beginning of the stance phase (when the foot is on the surface) and at the beginning of the swing phase (when the foot is in the air) were a lso m easu red . Sig nificant d ifferences between treatment groups were found for the swing phase timings and for ankle angles at touchdown and at lif t-o ff in both walk and tro t. The study showed that c ircuitry for locomotion is responsive to training p rocedures . This flex ib ility must be taken into account as neuronal theories of locomotion evolve." @default.
