- W652362846 abstract "This study attempts to ascertain the validity of the mechanistic approach with regard to nondestructive pavement evaluation for aggregate surfaced roads. A full-scale test road was built for this study. A Falling Weight Deflectometer and Bison strain gages were used to measure vertical strain and accumulation rut depth in four test sections. The test results indicate that the comparison between calculated differential deflection and measured differential deflection falls within a reasonable range, although the calculated deflectionis larger than the measured deflection. Nonlinear materials behavior was found to be the main cause of the discrepancy. Nonlinear constitutive equations derived in another research study from laboratory repeated-load triaxial tests were used to accurately calculate the differential deflection when accompanied by accurate in siiu density and moisture content information. However, due to the natural variability of in situ moisture, it was found that the added accuracy of the nonlinear analysis would seldom be realized. From experiments conducted on the test sections, an increase of gravel surface thickness was found to result in a decrease in subgrade dynamic strain. This is consistent with predictions based upon layered-elastic theory. Significant changes in thee magnitude of subgrade dynamic strain over a short period of time were observed. A decrease in subgrade moisture content was found to be the major contributing factor. This suggests that aggregate surface rutting occurs primarily during the high moisture period following spring law. For the test sections monitored in this study, both Visser's and Luhr's predictive methods were not able to accurately predict surface rut depth for aggregate surfaced roads. The Visser method may be limited to saturated conditions. Better rut prediction methods are needed for aggregate surfaced roads. A computer simulation using mechanistic theory and Luhr's equation was made to evaluate the optimum frequency of blading in aggregate surfaced road maintenance. Allowing the surface to accumulate three-inch deep ruts was found to be the most cost effective. (Author) to be the most cost effective. (Author)" @default.
