- W652955188 abstract "New studies on economies of scale in liner shipping arose during the nineties with the observed growth of average size of containerships on East/West trade. Many papers stress that this growth can be explained by the increase in port productivity that reduces the differential cost between smaller and bigger vessels. This paper argues that diseconomies of scale still exist for the biggest vessels in 1997 when considering that port productivity depends on the proportion of vessel’s capacity handled per call rather than the productivity and density of cranes. Therefore, it implies that the justification of technical co-operation (consortia and strategic alliances) between operators through the existence of economies of scale is not so automatic. Finally, the paper stresses that the formation of strategic alliances between operators, which are usually accompanied by a rationalisation of maritime networks (hubs and spokes), can also be analysed as an explaining factor of the observed growth of the average size of containerships. Cet article s’intéresse aux économies d’échelle dans le transport maritime de lignes régulières et propose une mesure alternative des déséconomies d’échelle au port. Il tente de montrer que l’accroissement observé de la taille des navires lors des années quatre-vingt dix peut s’expliquer à la fois par la croissance de la productivité et de la densité des grues, mais aussi par la croissance des taux d’enlèvement qui s’applique aux navires par port. Il propose un modèle pour lequel le temps au port dépend du nombre de conteneurs à (dé)charger relativement à la taille des navires repris sous le terme de taux d'enlèvement. Il souligne que l'apparition d'alliances de capacité depuis 1994, en favorisant à la fois une coopération sur les navires, mais aussi sur les réseaux ( Hubs and spokes ), est un facteur à l’origine de la croissance observée, depuis le début des années quatre-vingt dix, de la taille des navires en opération sur les principales maritimes routes Est/Ouest." @default.
