- W652980556 abstract "This short article looks at the emissions given out by a variety of engines as tested using a new method. This method adds an simulating an extra 7 kilometres at speeds from 90 to 120 kilometres per hour to the old urban test. The most dramatic effect of this new cycle is on emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOX). The test shows that lean burn engines emit five times as much NOX during fast driving as they do under the old cycle, but that the nox emitted by cars equipped with closed-loop, three way catalytic converters is still low. Under the new cycle, even when the lean burn engines are equipped with oxygen traps, they will not meet American standards. Cars equipped with catalytic converters met all the requirements. The argument that lean burn engines are cleaner than catalytic converters because they burn 20% less fuel is also shown to be inaccurate. Engines with lambda controlled closed loop catalysts burn 15% less fuel than standard engines. This leaves only a 5% advantage for lean burn engines, which falls to 20% under realistic driving conditions. On the other hand, catalytic converters still emit much more carbon monoxide than lean burn engines. The optimum would be a lean burn engine combined with a closed loop catalytic converter, which should be relatively easy to achieve. (TRRL)" @default.
