- W653207180 abstract "The County of Sacramento has begun a short-term demonstration project to enhance public transportation mobility for the Watt Avenue corridor. The corridor carries over 100,000 ADT, crosses both I-80 and US 50, and has 20 signalized intersections. The Sacramento Regional Transit System (RT) operates two bus routes with 30 buses per day in each direction making connections with Light Rail Train (LRT) stations at each end. Combining a comprehensive array of advanced technology, existing operational improvements and conventional solutions within a 36-month time frame will provide improved corridor traffic conditions that will be a part of a longer-range program of more extensive capacity improvements. Queue Jump movements for buses will give transit the optimal benefit. In the operational area, revised signalization hardware and new signal timing plans will create better traffic flow on the existing thoroughfare. In the advanced technology area, transit buses will be outfitted with devices to allow remote positioning, passenger counting (load factors), and signal priority. A signal priority system will give transit buses an advantage at signalized intersections so they are ushered through a series of green lights, rather than incur delay at traffic signals in what otherwise would be a stop-and-go manner. Multiple CCTV cameras along the corridor will allow operators to have seamless surveillance of actual traffic conditions, taking manual control as needed to overcome incidents and manage traffic flow. A fiber optic communications system will be deployed along Watt Avenue as part of the county's long-range signal system communications plan. This paper will discuss the strategy for a staged implementation of the geometric, technological, and operational improvements necessary to improve both the transit and traffic management of the corridor. It will also highlight the process the county has gone through to obtain TEA-21 funding and the steps that will have to be taken to successfully complete this interagency endeavor. Once the transit priority and enhancement strategy has been proven, it can then be applied, not only to the rest of the county corridors, but to all regional corridors that RT services." @default.
