- W653605307 abstract "Helsinki has participated in the international BEST survey since 2000. The survey was developed at the initiative of the Nordic capitals as they challenged each other to a friendly competition for the best public transport city. In 2011, five cities took part in the survey: Helsinki, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm and Geneva. The number of participating cities has varied from year to year. The aim of the BEST survey is to measure how satisfied residents are with public transport in their area to obtain information about how the use of public transport could be increased. The aim is to get new ideas from other cities and learn new ways of working and practices with the help of the benchmarking process. HSL has the chairmanship of the BEST survey during 2011- 2012. The annual process includes the survey conducted in March to identify the strengths and weaknesses of public transport services in the participating cities. The comparability of the results is ensured by conducting the telephone interviews simultaneously and using the same questions in all cities. The survey is conducted by an international research institute. The survey asks how satisfied residents are with the following aspects of public transport: overall satisfaction, supply, reliability, information, staff, safety, comfort, value for money, social significance and loyalty to public transport. Until 2010, in Helsinki, the survey covered Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa. In 2010, Kerava and Kirkkonummi were also included in the survey. In 2011, a total of 1, 693 interviews were conducted in all HSL’s member municipalities (Helsinki 757, Espoo 317, Vantaa 248, Kerava 132, Kirkkonummi 126, Kauniainen 113). The answers were weighted by age, gender and the population of each municipality. In terms of residents’ overall satisfaction, Helsinki (HSL area) is the best public transport city for a second year in a row with 78 per cent of the respondents being satisfied. Geneva came out second best also this year with 75 per cent of the respondents being satisfied, and Stockholm took the third place with 72 per cent of the respondents being satisfied. In Oslo, 67 per cent of the respondents were satisfied with public transport, while in Copenhagen, which came in last place, the figure was 57 per cent. Public transport supply is deemed better in Helsinki than in the other cities; in Helsinki, 71 per cent or the residents are satisfied with the supply, in the other cities the figure averages 62 per cent. In comparison to the other cities, residents of the Helsinki region are especially satisfied with public transport services outside the city centre. The residents are also more satisfied than elsewhere with the number of departures. In comparison to the other cities Helsinki was better also in terms of value for money with 55 per cent of the respondents being satisfied, in the other cities the figure averaged 35 per cent. Satisfaction with the value for money has steadily increased, which may be due to significantly increased fuel prices as well as to moderate increases in ticket prices. Helsinki rated higher also in terms of loyalty to public transport with a loyalty rate of 81 per cent, in the other cities the figure averaged 62 per cent. On the other hand, Helsinki did not fare as well in terms of questions related to the staff. In Helsinki, 59 per cent of respondents were satisfied with the staff’s ability to provide advice and their friendliness, while in the other cities the figure was on average ten per cents higher. Helsinki lags behind the other cities especially in terms of the staff’s ability to provide advice. However, there has been improvement over last year (3 per cents), which may be due to increased training and induction provided to bus drivers. In comparison to 2010, satisfaction with the availability of information increased the most. This year, 52 per cent of the respondents were satisfied with the availability of information, which was five per cents more than the year before. In the respondents’ opinion, the availability of information improved especially at stops and stations. This is possibly due to that the number of digital timetable displays at bus stops was increased. Also announcements in cases of delays and cancellations were increased and real-time information displays introduced at train stations. Satisfaction with the reliability of public transport decreased the most. This year, 54 per cent of the respondents were satisfied with the reliability of the services, which is four per cents less than the year before. In comparison to the other cities, however, the result is nonetheless the second best after Geneva. The decrease in the reliability of service is due to traffic problems caused by severe winter conditions during the last two winters." @default.
