- W65363010 abstract "Exposure of young amphibians and fishes to altered gravitational forces (AGF) affected the development of the roll induced static vestibulo-ocular reflex (rVOR). Its gain decreased and needed weeks to readapt to 1g-condition. A sensitive period was postulated during the development of the rVOR. - To characterize the hg-related sensitive period, the influence of hg-conditions on the development of the rVOR was investigated in tadpoles of a toad (Xenopus laevis) and youngsters of a cichlid fish (Oreochromis mossambicus). The peak-to-peak amplitude of the rVOR characteristic was used to describe differences between hg-animals and their 1g-reared siblings. In Oreochromis, different g-levels were used in the youngest fishes. Recordings of the rVOR started 24 hrs after termination of the hg-condition which, with one exception, lasted 9 days. - In Xenopus, the difference between the rVOR amplitude from 3g-and 1g-samples recorded at the 2nd and 3rd day after 3g-termination was smaller the younger the tadpoles were at onset of 3g; but 1g-readaptation depended in a complex manner on the age at 3g-onset. In Oreochromis, a reduction of the VOR amplitude was obtained by a 3g-exposure but not for 2.5g and 2g; however, a significant developmental acceleration was induced by hg-exposure. - Investigations on the development of gravity sensitive systems especially with respect to the analysis of the sensitive period would benefit from a hardware which allows experimental manipulations in a controlled manner during periods of AGF. Modular systems on the base of modified TypeI containers might be useful tools if a controlled food and oxygen supply is available, and if easy access to animals and AGF manipulations is possible. They would facilitate research on the sense of equilibrium in space because (1) separation of developmental stages, (2) testing of acute sensitivity levels at different METs during mission, or (3) automatic sample exchange between different g-levels became much easier. Experiments with Xenopus, to be flown on SMM6-mission in 1997, are a step in this direction. This project includes a sample exchange from 1g to μg during mission, and vice versa, so that the development of the rVOR started either under μg or under 1g-condition." @default.
