- W65366173 abstract "Acute renal failure is a common clinical event affecting 2–5% of all hospitalized patients, and up to 10–30% of those in intensive care units (ICUs) [1, 2]. Renal ischemia is one of the most important antecedent factors in acute renal failure, reported to be causative in 50% of cases [1]. Acute renal failure due to ischemiareperfusion (I/R) injury is seen after renal transplantation [3, 4], major abdominal and vascular surgery [5], coronary bypass surgery [6, 7], and in trauma [8], and sepsis [9]. Acute renal failure is associated with a mortality of approximately 50%, rising as high as 80% in patients with postoperative acute renal failure, a figure which has not changed in the past decades [1, 2]. Several pathophysiological mechanisms underlying acute renal failure have been unraveled in recent years. Studies, giving insight into the molecular and cellular processes leading to development of clinical acute renal failure, are of crucial importance in further elucidating its pathophysiology, thereby leading to the development of new therapeutic strategies." @default.
