- W654315944 abstract "An analysis of vehicle flow in the reboucas tunnel (2700 metres long; two galleries) based on traffic flow theory is described. Flow and average travelling speed, and density and average travelling speed ratios are examined for a period when the tunnel operated with two 3.6 metre wide traffic lanes per gallery in the same direction with 2.7 metre wide shoulders. The results are compared to those obtained after the tunnel started operating with three 3.3 metre wide lanes without shoulders. As a consequence, ideal capacity (2000 passenger cars/per hour/per lane) and reduction values of capacity due to the combined effect of lane width and lateral clearance proposed by the 1965 and 1985 highway capacity manuals are considered conservative. Based on traffic engineering concepts and construction costs, we propose a change in those values according to local conditions aiming at an ideal calculated capacity of around 2400 passenger cars/per hour/per lane in the reboucas tunnel for an unstable flow with an operational speed of 35.9 kilometres per hour. We also propose that lanes between 3 and 3.3 metres wide be adopted when passenger cars predominate whenever urban road lanes are altered or roads broadened to increase capacity (a). For the covering record of the conference, see IRRD no 808936." @default.
