- W65432015 abstract "During the university academic experience, students can face a range of challenges that requires adaptation and decision-making skills in personal, social, academic and career domains. For some students these challenges are difficult to face and interfere negatively with their continuity in graduation courses. This study aims to inquire college students about the factors they believe are important for their permanency or dropout in graduation courses. Participants are 127 college students, 35 women (28%) and 92 men (72%), aged 18 to 44 years old (μ=23.1; ±4.30), attending courses at public (49.2%) and private (50.7%) universities in southern Brazil. They fulfilled a demographic questionnaire and two additional questions (a) Which factors contributes to your permanency in university? and (b) Which factor(s) lead or would trigger you to give up your graduation course before its end? Students permanency factors with high frequency of response include positive expectations towards professional future, career motivation and perceived advancement in career goals, parental support to one s academic life, and one s financial resources to support academic expenses. Students’ dropout factors with higher frequency of response include lack of economic resources and family support, personal or family disease, uncertainty about professional future, disliking graduation course and university poor infrastructures. Results indicate that permanency and dropout in graduation courses are perceived by the students as multidimensional phenomena, with objective and subjective dimensions. Career counselors can use this information to help students and the academic institution fostering students' permanency in graduation courses and also to prevent their dropout. Career information, counseling and consulting strategies can be used simultaneously for these purposes." @default.
