- W654645061 abstract "Expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) has a very low coefficient of thermal conductivity compared with traditional subgrade materials. Therefore an EPS layer retards a heat flow through the pavement structure much more than a sand layer. After a discussion of the main heat flow mechanisms related to pavement structures and Fourier's differential equation as a basis for the modelling of the heat flow, the paper considers the influence of an EPS subgrade on the road surface temperature, the stiffness of the asphalt layer and the frost penetration depth. The temperature distribution in flexible pavement structures with an EPS subgrade and a sand subgrade respectively, was calculated by means of the finite element program WEGTEM. Input data were: the measured climatic data; the pavement layer thicknesses; and the thermal properties of the pavement materials and the subsoil. The climatic data used were: air temperature; windspeed; humidity; cloud cover; and global radiation during 1981 in the Netherlands. Despite the fact that the pavements with EPS show a different temperature distribution than those with a sand layer, the thermal properties of EPS have no influence on the design period of flexible pavements. EPS causes a larger frost penetration depth compared with the structures constructed with a sand layer, but the frost penetration won't reach the subsoil. This means that the application of EPS does not result in a lower bearing capacity of the subsoil in the thawing period. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 857900." @default.
