- W654924487 abstract "Over the last year, the Social Exclusion Action Planning Network has developed and presented a number of training courses. One of the most popular -- and groundbreaking -- was held on 4 October 2000, and looked at `Library Services for Refugees and Asylum-seekers'. One particular issue for public libraries that are attempting to provide services is the possibility of negative media focus. The work being undertaken by Merton and Kent was introduced by Di Reynolds (Projects Manager, BME/Outreach, London Borough of Merton) and Sharon Sperling (Team Leader, Young People's Services, East Kent, Kent Arts & Libraries). Di Reynolds stressed that refugees are living in fear and with the horror or the home situation -- they are not coming to the UK on some whim to scrounge. According to the New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (1993) definition, a refugee is: 1a. A person driven from his or her home to seek refuge, espec, in a foreign country from war, religious persecution, political troubles, natural disaster, etc.; a displaced person. b. A runaway, a fugitive. Di also drew attention to the Amnesty website which includes useful information, including ten facts about refugees (www.refuge.amnesty.org/htm/10facts.htm): 1 The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) says there are 27 million people in the world who are `of concern' to them. 2 Of these, at least 15 million people are entitled to international protection because they are refugees. 3 25-30 million people are displaced within their own countries. 4 80% of the world refugee population live outside Europe & North America. 5 Most refugees are women and children. 6 The majority of asylum seekers to Europe and North America are men. 7 More than half the world's refugees live in Africa and the Middle East 8 One in every 115 people on earth have been forced into flight. 9 People flee their homes & countries because they fear being victims of human rights violations. 10 Amnesty International has called for more effective international protection of refugees. From the work that has been undertaken so far, it has become clear that current services are only touching the surface of very real needs. Further work with Merton Asylum Welcome revealed a need for the following: * Free computer access in libraries/possible home provision of computers; * More Homework Clubs; * A video of the library, showing what happens inside; * More access to learning English; * Booklists of good quality books in English with recognisable backgrounds -- what to read without resorting to Mills and Boon; * Good quality fiction in Croatian, Albanian and Arabic, Russian, Portuguese and Somalis are immediate needs; * Ideas for teenagers, particularly during school holidays. To this, Sharon Sparling added the following key points: Many refugees have settled in areas which are already deprived (eg have been recognised by Sure Star). …" @default.
